WaiChinese creates Mandarin Chinese pronunciation evaluation software. Our program was built specifically to address the problems associated with traditional voice recognition software and tonal languages.
WaiChinese is changing the way the world learns Mandarin Chinese. Most students learning Mandarin as a second language only desire oral proficiency.
There is a large learning curve when switching from a romantic language to a tonal language. It requires the student to re-train their brain to focus on pitch and pitch changes. For romantic languages these pitch changes give keys to the emotion of the speaker. In mandarin pitch used to create different words and has little connection to emotion. Tones are so fundamental to proper mandarin pronunciation that if not mastered oral proficiency is impossible.
All well-known language programs offer some sort of voice recognition/ pronunciation evaluation software. This software was built for romantic languages and applied to mandarin. The basic idea behind this traditional software is break down the sound into little pieces. Then input these pieces into an algorithm to make a prediction of most likely word being said. This guess is then compared to the word the system is expecting to hear. As you can see these programs are built on expectation, prediction and limiting vocabularies (system expectation) to avoid the phonetic matches (Tones!).
WaiChinese offer mandarin tone evaluation software designed around the concept of pitch and tone. WaiChinese offers commercial and enterprise packages with the user interaction built around two principles:
1. The Mandarin student must have real-time mobile feedback on the quality of their tone. This feedback must be visual, auditory and fun!
2. There is no replacement for real teacher - student interaction. The system must easily integrate into the classroom. It must make the classroom interactive and efficient. It must allow teachers to enhance their current curriculum, while increasing the positive effect of their time on the student learning outcomes.
WaiChinese is currently looking for Mandarin teachers interested in becoming involved with beta testing.
